I’ve done it. I’ve met my idols. Only seconds before I spotted Andy’s gorgeous locks and Hamish’s trademark trucker cap, I honestly thought my morning tardiness had destroyed what may have been my only chance to ever meet them. I sound like a silly fangirl, but I’ve honestly thought they were brilliant for so many years, so I’m stoked I got to meet two people I respect and admire so highly. Here’s how it all went down.
Hamish & Andy are in London for the next few months, also on their ‘gap year’, living in a pub - although have the lovely perks of additionally a) co-hosting a radio show, b) making a TV series, and c) being pretty bloody famous. As soon as I found out months ago that they’d be here, I knew it’d be a great chance to meet them, especially being a fellow Australian. So, I found out the radio station they’d be broadcasting from and decided to head down there this morning and try and catch them after their broadcast. Not only did I think it finished at 10am when it actually finished at 9, but I had no idea what tube to catch and how long it would take to get there. After jumping between random trains at Baker Street Station and hoping I wasn’t on a one way trip to Paris, I finally got off about 200 metres from the radio station. The show had finished almost half an hour previously; I was sure I’d missed my chance. But, after running (mainly in the wrong direction) through unknown city streets and alleys, I finally found the right place, and standing out the front were Hamish and Andy.
By the time I reached them, I was totally out of breath from running to find them - I think they thought I was hyperventilating before I could actually explain that I’d practically just qualified for the London Olympics with the sprint I’d just done to meet them. They actually introduced themselves, shaking my hand, which I thought was truly humble of them. I explained that we were all doing pretty much the same thing this year (minus my celebrity status) - and immediately Andy handed me his phone and told me to give him my email address so he can send me tickets to watch the TV show being filmed. I’m not sure if he was just being friendly to a fellow Australian or prowling, but I’m hoping for the latter. There was only one other girl there, so I was able to have a really good chat with both of them. Hamish asked if we wanted a picture, and yes, within seconds I had the boys on either side with their arms around me (I think I’m allowed to be a bit of a silly fangirl over that).
After some more gap year conversation, our meeting came to an end, and Andy said he’d email me as soon as he could with details for the show and our wedding. I might be kidding about the second bit. I’m totally stoked that I managed to not only defy the speed of light to reach them but actually have a genuine chat with my idols. Gap year bucket list item #16 - check. I’m ecstatic.
Im so jealous.
